iPhone 4 Software Won’t Fix Antenna: Reports

When users first began complaining about the iPhone 4’s reception issues—namely, that touching the device’s exterior antenna rim seemed to kill its signal—Apple’s initial response was succinct: hold the phone differently, or buy a bumper for it.

“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas,” Apple wrote in a June 25 statement. “If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of the many available cases.”

But the idea of purchasing a $29 bumper through Apple, after shelling out either $199 or $299 for the iPhone 4 with a two-year plan, did not seem to compute with many users, who continued to complain on a variety of message forums. Perhaps in response to this, Apple issued another missive—this one insisting that the iPhone’s issues were software-related, not hardware.

Putting hard numbers to the iPhone 4 antenna issue

The discovery that gripping the iPhone 4 in a way that bridges the left and bottom antennas can cause serious signal problems has resulted in—to say the least—a lot of controversy. However, most of the data that either “proves” or “refutes” that existence of said problem has been anecdotal at best.

So AnandTech used a clever hack to get an iPhone 4 to report actual signal strength instead of “bars,” giving some quantitative data about how bridging the antennas can negatively affect signal strength. The analysis explains why not all users are affected by the problem, and further investigation also shows that the antenna design does in fact improve reception as long as the left-bottom area isn’t bridged when holding the device.

Other mobile handsets definitely have antenna attenuation problems—when cupping an iPhone 3GS or Google Nexus One in the manner that causes problems with the iPhone 4, AnandTech measured 14dB and 18dB drops, respectively. However, the problem with the iPhone 4′s external antenna is worse; bridging the antennas detunes 3G reception by a full 24dB.

First iPhone 4 review: Features, specs better than predecessor iPhone 3GS

As the iPhone 4 reaches the hands of its much awaiting customers, a day ahead of what was promised by Apple, the internet is full with reviews of this gadget which happens to be the most successful launch from Apple yet. The features of iPhone 4 has earned for themselves a maddening craze among the gadget freaks from all over the world that makes it well placed above its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS. People have followed the device all through from the day Steve Jobs, Apple CEO announced it to a couple of leaks the device got engaged with and now the device is finally in customer’s hands who eagerly wait to give their valuable judgment.

First and foremost, the most important feature of iPhone 4 for which it has been appreciated is its looks. People have liked its new sleek, thinner industrial look which is definitely better than iPhone 3GS. The device has a sturdier look and runs on a more powerful processor, the A4 processor which is found in iPad. The most talked about video calling feature of the iPhone 4 has also been analyzed for its FaceTime feature but requires a very strong Wi-Fi connection to be able to stay connected. So we can safely say the camera front has been taken care of by Apple in the new iPhone 4 but for a few glitches on the Wi-Fi side.

The iPhone 4 reviews for its noise-canceling microphone and an improved audio chamber were also positive. The phone delivered a clear sound on both the ends. According to David Pogue of The New York Time, “Sound is much better on both the ends, thanks in part to a noise canceling microphone and an improved audio chamber.” He also liked the stainless steel edge band which is now a part of the antenna.

Another important iPhone 4 feature is its battery life which according to many analysts is far beyond expectations. Josh Topolsky of Engadget said, “In fact, we managed to squeeze more than 38 hours –yes 38 hours –of life out of a single charge using the phone as we normally would.” He also commented that the battery did well exceeding their expectation for longetivity during testing.

Overall, the iPhone 4 reviews are overwhelming and the device is a hit and has quite well managed to live up to the hype which was created around it. Except the FaceTime’s Wi-Fi only functionality, the general consensus for the wonder device is positive.

DSstyles iPhone Case Review – Besttechie.net

First, I’d like to thank to Jay over at DSstyles for sending me a few cases to review and share with everyone.  DSstyles has a large selection of iPhone cases for the original, 3G, and 3GS.  Their selection is pretty good.  It focuses mostly on more sleek and shiny cases, however, does a few leather ones as well.

The ones I were sent were the D.S. (Darius) and the Metallico Series both of which are very nice and come with a velvety cloth holding case so you can throw your iPhone in your backpack or handbag and not have to worry about it getting scratched up.  Overall, both cases are more for the people who are interested in keeping their iPhone stylish.  If you’re looking for a more protective case I recommend you read my previous blog post where I discuss more protective cases.

The D.S. case is a bit different from the More-Concepts case I ordered a while back in that instead of the back having a circular cut for the Apple logo to be seen through, the D.S. has a cut in the back that looks like an Apple logo.  This makes for an overall nicer look.  Meanwhile, the Metallico Series is essentially a copy cat of the back of the iPhone 3G/3GS.  It has the Apple logo, the word “iPhone”, a 16GB label (which may or may not be good for 3GS owners), and even goes as far as having a model number and FCC labeling printed on it.  I’m not sure of the potential copyright infringement here but it doesn’t really matter for this particular review.
