In terms of sales, Sony’s PSP has been getting trounced by the various incarnations of Nintendo’s DS since day one. Despite the PSP’s better graphics and flexibility as a mobile media platform, the DS has grabbed hold of the handheld gaming market and shows no sign of letting go.
Since the introduction of the App Store in 2008, a new mobile gaming juggernaut has emerged, seemingly out of nowhere — the iPhone/iPod touch. With the forthcoming launch of the iPad, whose larger screen and more powerful CPU could make it a gaming powerhouse, it means there are now three very big players in the mobile gaming market… and Sony is in an untenable position already.

Apple, increasingly facing tougher competition in the market for smartphones, sued the Taiwanese phonemaker HTC, accusing it of violating patents related to the iPhone.
HTC was the first company to manufacture a cellphone based on Google’s Android operating system. It is also making the Nexus One phone, which Google is selling directly to consumers.
In a court filing, Apple said that a bevy of HTC-made cellphones — including the Nexus One, T-Mobile’s G-1 and the MyTouch 3G — use patent-protected technologies owned by Apple without having a license for them. Apple said HTC has infringed on 20 of its patents, covering aspects of the iPhone’s user interface and hardware.
Several of the patents relate to technology behind touch screens, including one that lets a device’s screen detect more than one finger at a time.

With the introduction of the iPad, Apple’s status as a cultural icon reached new heights. Based on an unscientific survey of newspapers archived by The Newseum, pictures of or stories about the tablet-style computer appeared on front pages in at least 47 states and the District of Columbia and no fewer than 24 countries on six continents—in places as varied as Bulgaria, Uruguay, Turkey, and Portugal.
When is the last time you saw a company command that kind of attention without first filing for bankruptcy, contributing to the collapse of the global financial system, or building a car with a gas pedal that sticks? The media’s crush on Apple is not just alive and well, but it has gone global.

If analyst predictions are any indication of what the iPad will see in actual sales, it’s going to be a good run for Apple.
In a research note to clients on Wednesday, Needham & Company’s Charlie Wolf predicted Apple would sell two million iPads in fiscal 2010 and an additional six million devices in 2011, according to a report on AppleInsider.
What’s interesting is that Wolf says more than half of the iPad sales would be drawn from the iPod Touch. Many have said that the iPad looks like a larger version of Apple’s iPod Touch.
Wolf’s predictions certainly aren’t at the high end of what analysts are predicting for iPad sales. IDC analyst Richard Shim told CNET last week that he estimates the company will sell 4 million to 5 million iPads this year, doubling Wolf’s prediction.
Wolf said he is waiting to see what the iPad’s catalyst will be to help Apple boost sales. As examples, he pointed to the iTunes Store for the iPod and the App Store for the iPhone.
It could be that Apple will rely on the infrastructure it built for both of those devices, and iBooks to propel sales of the iPad in the next two years.

Details on the next version of Apple’s iPhone OS have begun the leak out. According to unconfirmed sources, this will include support for two-way video calls, as well as some other enhancements, like file uploads, spell checking, and more.
Previous reports has said that Apple was getting ready to unveil iPhone OS 4.0, but there will apparently be a version released before then: the proto-type Apple iPad units that were being shown off last week were running iPhone OS 3.2.

Apple certainly isn’t the first company to launch or even talk about a tablet. Microsoft launched the concept in 2001, and since then we’ve seen perhaps dozens of devices based on the design, including a Dell prototype just a few weeks ago.
So there’s no question that Apple isn’t first to the market. What’s unusual, however, is a claim that Apple actually copied an existing design.
That charge comes from the chief executive of Shenzhen Great Long Brother Industrial Co., who claims that Apple copied the design of its P88 tablet. All this is being reported by the Shanghaiist blog, which also links to a Spanish-language report in El Mundo, claiming that the company could sue Apple, if the iPad is ever brought to China.

With iPad, Apple has created a highly mobile, lightweight device that can run any and all existing iPhone apps, with a set of built-in apps reworked for its large, multi-touch screen.
The iPad is slightly smaller than a sheet of regular paper, just one-half inch thick, and weighs 1.5 pounds (1.6 with an optional 3G modem built-in). The 9.7-inch LED backlit glossy multi-touch screen has 1024×768 pixel resolution (132 pixels per inch).
Wireless connectivity is 802.11n Wi-Fi (backward compatible with 11abg devices), Bluetooth 2.1 + Ehanced Data Rate (EDR). 3G cellular is available for $130 more, supporting UMTS/HSDPA and GSM/EDGE networks, but available at least at first only on AT&T’s network.

The company released its quarterly results on Monday, but Wall Street is waiting for Wednesday, when Apple is expected to unveil a new tablet computer that investors hope will be as huge a phenomenon as its iconic iPod and iPhone.
Along with its strong earnings — Apple posted big gains in profit and revenue in the December quarter — a successful tablet launch could provide a long-term catalyst for the company’s stock. Although the tech giant’s shares often sell off right after major launches after months of rumor fuel big expectations.
On Tuesday, Apple’s shares jumped higher, rising as much as 4 percent before closing up 1.41 percent at $205.94.

The teaser for Apple’s press event, “Come see our latest creation,” has a double meaning. Content creators, not gadget freaks, will be the biggest target of Apple’s Wednesday press conference.
Although most of the speculation has centered on a tablet device that will likely be announced at the event, Apple CEO Steve Jobs probably has bigger plans in mind.
Apple’s goal is to offer a new platform for content creators to reinvent books, magazines and online content — in addition to offering a new avenue for content producers to make money. That platform will likely be far broader than just a tablet device, and will extend to every device or computer that iTunes touches.
