Apple could lower the price of its next version of the iPhone in order to better compete in a mobile marketplace increasingly crowded by Google Android, Microsoft and BlackBerry devices, according to a Morgan Stanley analyst.
In a note to investors, reported widely on sites such as Apple Insider, analyst Katy Huberty said she expected Apple to launch a new generation of smartphones in June “that offer both a lower total cost of ownership and new functionality, potentially including gesture-based technology.”
Apple’s iPhone 3G S currently retails on the company’s Website for $199 and up, while the price for the iPhone 3G starts at $99.
Apple has noted some recent successes in the mobile space, including its 10 billionth song sold through its iTunes Store, but faces an increasingly competitive environment from other manufacturers and mobile software makers, including Google, Research In Motion and Microsoft.

It seems just like yesterday that we unpacked our bags from Las Vegas and CES, but here we are again, gearing up to head off to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2010. The show is put on by the GSM Association (GSMA) and brings together handset manufacturers, mobile operators, software companies, and many more wireless industry experts from around the world where they can showcase their new products and services as well as discuss and learn about the latest mobile trends and technologies.
At last year’s event, we saw new devices from most of the major players, including Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, and LG, and even some fresh faces, such as Acer. Touch-screen phones were (and still are) all the rage; being green meant more than shipping a phone in a recyclable box; and phones took another step toward being that all-in-one gadget in your life. We also saw the debut of Windows Mobile 6.5 and the surging trend of app stores and 4G and LTE. The show never fails to produce exciting product launches and often sets the tone for the rest of the year. So what’s in store for MWC and 2010? Plenty.

UK company X2 has revealed the iTablet – but this one is nothing to do with Apple.
The new device is running Windows Mobile 7 and is powered by an Intel Atom processor, similar to the ones used in most netbooks.
It also has 250GB of storage, a 12.1-inch multi-touch capacitive display, and more tellingly, the ability to multi-task and run Flash video.

Thick ‘n’ chips
There will also be a front 1.3MP web cam for video chatting, USB ports and an HDMI-out connection for sending your content to larger screens.
However, this OC is 35mm thick – which makes sense given X2′s background is in providing rugged mobile PCs to the likes of the military. However, it’s not going to compete on aesthetics with Apple’s 13.4mm iPad.
A number of firms are expected to release tablet PCs in the coming months as they seek to capitalise on the interest wrought by Apple and HP with their iPad and slate respectively, so it’s likely we’ll hear a lot of companies extolling the virtues of their device over Apple’s.

Smartphone users who want to buy a device that they know will get an upgrade to Windows Mobile 7 when it’s released this fall should seriously consider the HTC HD2 — sources at HTC have said this device will be getting an upgrade to the next major version of this operating system from Microsoft.
HTC Russia recently promised that the HD2 will be getting Windows Mobile 7, and warned that this would be the only current model from this company to do so. This message came in the form of a Tweet, which was quickly removed.
In addition, Terry Snelling on the HTC customer support team reportedly e-mailed a customer a promise that the HD2 will be getting the version 7 upgrade when it becomes available in November.
